OK, herbalists. One of my patients brought me a bunch of empty bottles from some herbal supplements she takes. She wanted to know if they would help her in fighting her breast cancer. None of these ring a bell to me. Have any of y'all run across these? Any general or specific comments on these would be appreciated. I posted this here instead of in Supplements since these aren't the type of supplements that people commonly use in training.

Graviola

BarleyGreen

Modified Citrus Pectin

MGN3- Arabinoxylan Compound, rice bran, Hyphomycetes Mycelia extract (from ****ake mushrooms)

my input is i steer clear of herbs to cure cancer, or supplements to cure them.....about the only herb i'd deal with for cancer is marijuana and gigner...i'd rather go the allopathic route.

barleygreen i've seen in stores before, but the others i've never heard of.......let me do some research though.....

who'd a thought soursop would cure cancer?

anyways...delphi, where is she at with her cancer? since your seeing her, i presume she's having a lumpectomy or mastectomy done?

She had a locally advanced breast cancer with subdermal lymphatic invasion. Makes the skin thick and puffy. The pores of the skin become very prominent causing a condition called peau d'orange- orange peel. Mass in the breast was >7 cm in diameter- also qualifies as locally advanced. Greater than 8 axillary lymph nodes were positive for CA. The locally advanced state and >8 lymph nodes make her 5-year survival rate probably less than 20%. I've already done the modified radical mastectomy (includes an axillary lymph node dissection). Put a Mediport in her contralateral subclavian vein at the time of surgery so she can get chemo. I'm glad she's going ahead with chemo. Will probably get external beam radiation to the chest and axilla as well. In general, she's hosed. That mass must've been palpable for at least a year, maybe as long as 3.

damn.

early detection pays huh?

well anyways...you've already done the mastectomy, and now it's time for chemo fun.....i'm thinking none of these remedies are going to help her at this point....although, like i said, marijuana and ginger, while she deals with the chemo sickness. Umm...if she come through that okay, and goes into remission, she might could try these herbs, particularly the graviola, to keep the cancer from coming back. but they aren't going to help much now, i don't think. Well perhaps the one that aids in stopping metastasis? that one would be logical to take whilst doing chemo, although i wonder if the chemo would ravage her system too much for it to be effective.

are you accepting volunteer examiners? :D

I have a friend who believes in the whole "life force from eating veggies" thing and live enzymes and natural healing etc. He says that his wife has two friends that both have breast cancer and have pretty much successfully fought it off using herbal remedies and natural healing only...with no doctors etc. I'll try and see if I can find out what methods/herbs/etc they used.

Doc I have been working for a large non-profit Hospice for the past 4 years & I certainly hope your pt. won't need my type of care....As you probably know-our pt.'s in Hospice have taken all treatment available, did not want tx or it was just not an option due to advancement, mets, age ect.. Most of the pt.'s I see are Ca & in just the 4 years I have been in Hospice I have seen & lost a LOT . I don't blame anyone for trying any tx because, really; what have you got to lose?... We had a pt. back in the summer that was on the "Hallelueha diet" only raw vegs & juice made from vegs (mostly carrots)and she was on Barley Green. Unfortunately- she expired & about the only thing we could tell the diet did for her was give her an orange tint from all the carrots.
I hope your patient responds to the chemo & rx Doc & you don't have to consult Hospice.
I love my job, but in a way it sucks that my security for my family depends on us keeping a fairly high census of people that are dying . Especially when I have pt.'s my own age-makes you really think..... Sorry I kind of got off topic.
