Ok: two individuals; A and B.

They are both the same gender, age, height, weight, bodyfat...basically the same person, and for experimental control; they have the same tolerance to caffiene and have not ever touched it in their life.

They both drink a cup of coffee with exactly the same amount of coffee (same brand) and same amount of water (same temperature if you are really that concerned!)

They both drink it at the same time of day e.g. 9am.

Individual A goes for 45 minutes cardio whilst individual B sits on his arse for the morning.

Now for my questions: How long (approximately) does the stimulation from caffiene last from an average cup of coffee ?

and

Would the activity by individual A have any affect on the stimulation from the caffiene?

and

Would the stimulation from the caffiene wear off at the same time in both individuals?

Sorry if this is a stupid question buts this idea has really been playing round in my head....

I dont think so. I think that the person who is more active will cull more stimulation from the coffee's caffeine content.
But I think that a person who pops six Vivarin tabs and goes dancing will be stimulated just as long as a person who pops six and sits on his fat ass(and has the shakes for a couple hours), even though B may never bring the drug's benefits to fruition. In fact, I think that, from experience, when you're sedentary, caffeine has almost a relaxing effect. I drink tea at night- strong tea- all the time and it never keeps me up. I usually work out in the afternoons between classes so I'm usually pretty beat when I get home. I dunno.

I'll take a shot at it. For one thing caffeine is a stimulus, a fact we have pointed out. The next thing is that is the effectiveness of a stimulus have anything to do with physical exertion. I wouldn't think so, i say this because i feel the effects of a cup of coffee for the same amount of time when i'm sitting on my but or when i'm working out. As far as how long the effects last, I'm not quite sure, I've never really thought about it.

Thanks for the reply Rob (cool name by the way).

Anyone else like to dab their fingers on this topic?

the metabolism of caffeine (and thus its elimination) is a function of liver enzymes which will oxidize it to uric acid analogues. Since the liver is recruited heavily in both sendentary and active living, i would predict that the difference in activities would be would be minimal. However, the active person's loss of water as sweat would slow the process as this would change the osmotic pressure of the blood. Still the effects would be minimal.

hmmmmm, well this is what im thinking (good Q btw), during my cutting cycle ive taken caffiene pills, to assist with my metabolism, aswell as ephedra. every morning on an empty stomach i would pop a combo of caffiene and ephedra, now on some days i would just do that to up my metabolism while i just "chilled" at my house, while other days i would do cardio, or head to the gym for some heavy lifting.

the results: after taking them before workouts, ive noticed that the stimulation is greatly decresed after workouts, on the other hand, when i just sit at home and watch tv or something i would feel the stimulation for hours(shakyness).

so in conclusion from my experiences, i would say that durations of physically exerting activities will shorten the effects of energy enhancing stimulators. (ie. caffiene)

also remember that after a hard workout your body releases alot of seritonin so that would make you feel relaxed even though the caffeines affects have not worn off yet.

The feeling after a hard(harder the better) workout is just like taking exctasy! dam I love that feeling!

I read somewhere (probably encarta.com) that caffeine loses its ergogenic effects under hot temperatures. That doesn't mean anything for lifters, since we can drink gatorade between sets, but athletes should worry about it.
