Has anybody here had a hernia repaired? If so, what kind was it and how was it repaired? Are there any exercises you do or do not do? How has the repair affected your workouts? For that matter, do any of you currently have a hernia? Just curious. I have had several patients ask me about doing situps, crunches, etc following inguinal hernia repairs.

My girlfriend had hernia in her belly button or in and around there.
Whatever, anyways it is still not healed and this is a year later.
She can squat, deadlift, bench press etc, but some ab movements depending on she is feeling hurt her.

I've had two patients develop recurrences of umbilical hernias by using whatever version of an Ab roller they use. One waited 6 months after surgery before trying it. Scar tissue has reached its maximum tensile strength by 6 weeks, so he definitely waited long enough. I recommend that my patients never use an Ab roller after repair. I don't have any hernias but I sure got worried about how my inguinal regions felt after the last time I used one. Those devices place the most strain I've ever felt on the lower abdominal region.

I had a hernia although when I was 7 years old...

I don't remember too much about it..

I remember telling my Mum I had a lump just below my belly button, to the left and she rung the doctor and the next thing I know I am in hospital and they have to operate the next day !

It was my b/d too :(

However it was quite painfull for a while after but then again this was about 15 years ago! I bet procedures have gotten a bit better since then lol.. I was ok to do pretty much anything after a couple of months..

My younger brother had 2!! One on each side.. :(

I had a hernia in my lower abdomen/groin a few years ago. It was pretty bad, the size of a very large egg. It was a pain to do any weight lifting when it started to become worse and constantly popping out. Doing deadlifts or squatting while feeling your guts popping out is not a nice feeling...

Anyways it made me stop weightlifting and even affected my daily life. Constant stomach aches getting worse. Finally I got it operated about 4 years ago. BEST decision of my life even though it didn't make me workout immediately though, I did enjoy eating more. :D

The surgeon told me they had put some kind of patch on the hole and that it shouldn't come back very easily.

I would have been released from the hospital the same day as I was operated but as I lived alone I had to stay over the night for observation. First time I had to take a pee in the hospital was somewhat painful. Probably took 30 minutes... The first pooping session is another story... The first 2-3 weeks are a real pain after the operation but with good pain killers it wasn't too bad. Getting up from the bed, laughing, sitting in a car on a bumby road etc also brought a grin to my face.

After a few months I wondered why the hell I hadn't done the decision to get it fixed earlier as life was so much easier!

I had some sensation of tightness in my lower abdomen for a few years but nowdays after getting more and more into lifting again it seems to have faded away only remembering me very seldom.

I'm still a bit paranoid about monitoring my lower abdomen during workouts when doing heavy lifting but starting to relax more now that my abs seem to keep my guts inside after all. :D Before I got the hernia I used to use a belt on squats and deads but have now abandoned it. I do all my lifting without belt and think it has aided in strengthening my mid section. It also prevents from excess pressure on my guts during lifts.

It has affected my lifting in a way that I now feel a lot tighter in exercises like squats, deads and any lift done standing. I don't feel any need for a belt any longer as I have learnt to use my own corset. :)

I understand that sneezing post-op is hell. I definitely recommend against it. LOL

I'm lucky that I didn't feel sick after waking up from the anesthesia. I know several people that get really sick from it and they prefer local anaesthesia if possible. However I didn't find any interest in following my own operation LIVE. ;)

i thought a hernia was when a plate in between 2 spinal parts got dislocated what you seem to be talking about is some sort of tumor-like lump

nope...that would be a herniated disk.

they are talking about hiatal hernias.

so just what are those

a weakening or a tear in either the abdominal wall, or groin area, where essentially your guts kinda poke out of the weakened area under your skin.

(i might be making this all up, but i think that's what it is)

do..sorry...they were actually talking about inguinals not hiatals....but similar idea for both...i can't remember which refers to which area though...(groin v ab)

Isn't a Hernia when the muscle wall rips (usually around the groin or abdominal area) and the internal organs pertrude?

Last night when I was doing squats I got a burning pain just below my waist line. I have had this pain before when I do deads. I hope this is not a hernia. Any ideas

Vox, where is the felling in relation to the midline? There's a firm inguinal ligament that runs from the pubic bone up and out to the pelvic wing (iliac crest). How far above that ligament is it?

The pain is 1 and a half"-2'" below the waist. I am not sure what the midline means but I think you mean what half of the body? The pain is on the right side about 3" from midline. The pain starts in that area then it shoots down, I think the way you described. Hope this helped.

The pain I got from the hernia when lifting was an aching kind of pain in my groin on the right side (My scare is just under the waistline on the right side) especially when doing deadlifts and squats. If it's a hernia you will soon notice a slight bump under your skin when you lift that will grow unless you get it fixed. The pressure from lifting heavy weights can make it worse pretty soon and it will start to pop out even when you're not doing any lifting.

Get it checked by a doctor. If it is hernia it might not be very bad yet and can be fixed pretty easily.
